Shortly after the United States became a country, their leaders decided to test their new found independence. For various reasons, some of which were legitimate beefs with Britain, they decided to go to war once again. The goal was to exert their economic rights and to oust Great Britain from North America. Britain for their part was already at war and had few troops to spare. It then fell upon what regular troops were already in what was to become Canada, along with their indigenous allies and colonists to defend the true north strong and free.

While the war ended up in a draw, and the borders were restored to their original state as per the treaty of Ghent, there were some pretty epic battles along the way. For one, the American national anthem was written in response to the British bombardment of fort McHenry near Baltimore. The U.S. also set fire to the town of York which is present day Toronto. Probably the biggest blow to the U.S. came on August 14, 1814 when British troops occupied Washington D.C. and burned the White House along with other important buildings.

Anyway, with the political climate being what it is. With Donald Trump threatening to annex Canada, I think it’s a good time to remind our American cousins of that famous date and the consequences of messing with Canada.
